Bio…

Roy Tabwa’s musical journey is as diverse and multifaceted as his life story. Born in Angola to Cape Verdean parents from Fogo Island, and raised in Portugal before emigrating to the United States at the age of 16, Roy embodies a true “citizen of the world.” His music reflects this rich cultural mosaic—rooted in Cape Verdean traditions, shaped by Lusophone influences, and expanded by global sounds.

From an early love for Cape Verdean greats like Luís Morais and Cesária Évora to his fascination with the rhythms of Fogo, Roy built a foundation that spanned continents. In America, he immersed himself in both discovery and study—absorbing world music, punk rock, and icons like Lou Reed, The Cure, and Bob Marley, while dedicating hours each day to guitar. A transformative trip to Brazil in 2000 opened his ears to the genius of João Gilberto, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Djavan, inspiring him to explore the harmonic richness of Brazilian music.

Roy’s artistry extends beyond performance. A technologist by profession, he embraces the fusion of art and innovation, using cutting-edge tools to merge music and visuals. This bold approach is exemplified in “Kilamandjaro” (2025) — an anthem to resilience paired with a Pixar-inspired AI music video created with Al B. Freitas and dancers like Tony Tavares.

In recognition of his unique sound, Roy was also featured by Putumayo World Music, further cementing his role as an artist whose work bridges cultures and resonates with global audiences.

His discography includes the debut album The Tabwa People (2018, ORKKA International), produced by Cape Verdean legend Kim Alves, and the singles Dochi (2025), Progresso (2025), and Kilamandjaro (2025). Far from a culmination, these works mark the beginning of a lifelong creative journey bridging Cape Verde, Angola, Portugal, Brazil, and beyond. Drawing inspiration from Cesária Évora to Bob Marley, Roy Tabwa’s sound is an invitation to dance, to reflect, and to connect across borders.
